After you defeated Andariel in Act I, Warriv the Caravan Master transported you and Deckard Cain the Elder to the city Lut Gholein. This city is surrounded by a desert on all sides except on the east side because that's where the ocean is.

The first thing you should to is explore the city and talk to the different NPC's and Deckard Cain the Elder.
